Coriander, also known as Coriandrum sativum, is an annual herb that reaches a height of up to 50cm. The plant has delicate, feathery leaves and produces small, round seeds that are yellowish-brown in colour.
Coriander seeds are rich in antioxidants and essential oils. They are utilised to aid digestion, reduce bloating, and promote healthy bowel movements. Coriander also possesses antimicrobial properties, helping to combat bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses. Furthermore, coriander has been found to have potential chelating properties, assisting in heavy metal detoxification. It is also used traditionally to support healthy sleep patterns and manage anxiety. The leaves (cilantro) of the coriander plant are also commonly used in culinary dishes, adding a fresh and citrusy flavour.
